5 STEPS TO CREATING A MEDITATION SPACE

1. FIND A FEEL-GOOD SPACE.

Choose a quiet space that will make you smile when you walk in. This could be a room with lots of natural light or somewhere with a calming view. If it is hard for to find a space with these qualities, take your meditation spot outside to your deck, patio, or garden.

2. ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS.

Choosing a space that is free from distractions and will only enhance your meditation experience. Some distractions might include family members, clutter, mobile devices, or unfinished chores that might take your focus. Instead, create a designated space that will allow you to distance yourself from any to-dos.

3. PLAY MEDITATIVE MUSIC.

Music can be relaxing for many individuals. Meditative music, even when playing quietly in the background, can eliminate any distractions and allow you to find a peaceful state of mind. Choose music with soothing sounds rather than lyrics that will last the desired amount of meditation time.

4. BRING NATURE OR AROMATHERAPY

TO YOUR SPACE.

Since nature is organically very healing, it only makes sense to bring harmony and balance into your space. This can include plants, fresh flowers, jars with sea shells, or adding a small water fountain. Aromatherapy can also help with relaxation, while also stimulating brain function, enhancing immune health, relieving any muscle pain, and reducing stress.

5. ADD A PERSONAL TOUCH.

Include any smells, sounds, or objects in your space that will soothe your mind and body without adding unwanted clutter. Items like bells, chimes, crystals, a statue of Buddha, affirmation stones, beads, and artwork are great elements for creating a peaceful environment to focus on your meditation.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

  • Avoid technology (other than a music player). Make your space a “no phone zone” to allow yourself to detach from any extra stress, chaos, or anxiety.

  • Lighting and color of the room are key aspects of your meditation room. If there is a lot of natural light in your space, adding a window treatment such as a sheer curtain to diffuse the brightness will keep your space feeling cozy. If natural lighting is hard to come by, allow light fixtures and the color of the room help you to achieve the overall feeling you wish you create.

  • Let fresh air into your space.  Fresh air is proven to boost brainpower, improve your health, and help you feel refreshed. If fresh air access is limited, make sure the space is well ventilated with fans or air purifiers.
